Smoke Dampers

Smoke Control for Safer Building Evacuations

Smoke dampers are specialised components installed within a building’s HVAC system to restrict the movement of smoke through ductwork during a fire. When connected to a smoke detection or fire alarm system, they close automatically to help contain smoke to its area of origin.

Unlike fire dampers (which activate due to heat), smoke dampers respond to smoke detection, helping preserve breathable air and visibility in unaffected areas. They play a vital role in protecting escape routes and supporting safe evacuation during an emergency.

Where Are They Used?

Air conditioning, outside air and exhaust system ducts

Air transfer openings between smoke barriers

Pressurisation and smoke exhaust systems

Hospitals, aged care, shopping centres, high-rise buildings, and public facilities

Why Are Smoke Dampers Important?

prevent smoke spread

Help prevent smoke spread through ducts and plenums

visibility

Support safe evacuation by preserving visibility

Integrated Systems

Work in conjunction with fire detection and smoke control systems

compliance

Essential for compliance in many commercial, public, and multi-storey buildings

Dual Protection

Can be combined with fire dampers for dual protection (fire/smoke combo dampers)

Temperature Tested

These dampers are the same as normal air control dampers however they have a high temperature rubber seal to all sealing surfaces to be able to withstand the elevated temperature of the smoke it is containing.

Which Damper Is Right for You?
